This 5-day, in person course is a regulated heat pump qualification designed for plumbers that wish to demonstrate aptitude in installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps.

It is a valuable resource for operatives or individuals employed or seeking employment with companies that are MCS accredited or interested in joining the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) as a certified installer.

Curriculum:

The course curriculum provides a qualification that demonstrates knowledge in the requirements and process of installation, commissioning, handover, inspection, service, and maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems non-refrigerant circuits. It serves as a foundational base for MCS accreditation for operatives.

Prerequisites:

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in any one of the following*:

  • Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification
  • Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation)
  • Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation)
  • Oil-Fired Technical Services
  • Gas Installation and Maintenance

In addition, if not included in the above certifications:

  • Water Regulations/Water Byelaws (WRAS or equivalent)
  • Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating

*Equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence can be substituted.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, enrollees will:

  • Understand the health and safety risks and be able to apply safe systems of work associated with air source heat pump systems
  • Be familiar with regulations and standards relating to the installation, testing, and commissioning of air source heat pump systems
  • Have an operational understanding of heat pump units and components
  • Be familiar with the variety of air source heat pump systems and arrangements for hydraulic emitter circuits
  • Understand the factors of air source heat pump selection and system design
  • Know the air source heat pump installation preparatory standards
  • Be able to plan and prepare for the installation of air source heat pump systems
  • Be able to install, test, commission, inspect, and maintain air source heat pump systems
  • Be able to handover air source heat pump systems to the client after installation and commissioning
  • Be able to diagnose and rectify defects and malfunctions on air source heat pump systems
